Select a paper mache' box with a lid and two colors of acrylic paint. Brush a thin coat of acrylic paint (one of the two colors selected) to the inside and the bottom of the box, and the outside of the lid; allow to dry. Brush a thin coat of the acrylic paint to the outside of the box and and the inside of the lid; allow to dry.
Spread a piece of freezer paper, shiny side up, on the work surface. Place a tablespoon of a tacky glue that dries clear on the freezer paper. Place one teaspoon each of the two colors of acrylic craft paint on the freezer paper (the paint colors should not touch one another) next to the tacky glue on the freezer paper.
Use a craft stick to spread a heavy coat of the tacky glue over the top and sides of the lid. The coat can be smooth or textured (see picture). Using a craft stick, spread one color of the acrylic paint unevenly over the glue (some portions of the glue will be visible); repeat with the second color paint. No portions of the glue should be visible after the second color has been applied. Set aside to dry. Apply the glue, and the paint in the same matter to the box, but do not apply the glue/paint to the recessed ridge along the top of the box. Set aside to dry.
To keep the lid from sticking, rub candle wax along the inner edge of the lid.
Now your box is already to hold a gorgeous trinket...one you've been given or one you'll be giving.

which two colors did you use on the boxes?
Dark green and antique gold were used for these boxes. But you can use any color combination you'd like.
Thanks so much. I have difficulty in putting colors together and making them look as nice as yours. I'll try it!
